The inn was built in 1905 for Winlock W. Steiwer and his family. Steiwer was one of the early founders of Fossil and great-uncle to Bill Bowerman of NIKE fame. A prominent Oregon legislator, Steiwer started the first bank in Wheeler County, the Fossil General Mercantile and the Fossil Water Company. Over the years the home was converted to four apartments. It was restored to a single unit dwelling and bed & breakfast in 1995. The inn is named for the “bridge creek flora” — the term commonly used by paleontologists and geologists to describe the plant fossils found from Fossil to Mitchell to the John Day valley 100 miles away. |
